When Bad Weather Happens to Good People
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to go into the planning process with a realistic outlook about weather. No matter what you wish, want and hope for, do a reality check and accept that it’s not in anyone’s control. Sadly, it’s just not going to be in anyone’s power to change, should the weather on your wedding day take a turn for the worse.
If all or any part of your wedding takes place outdoors, my best advice is to choose a venue where you can be just as happy with the backup indoor space as you would be with the outdoor space.
My next best advice is to be happy with that same Plan B, even if you’re not truly in love.
Lastly, if tenting is an option at your venue, consider exercising that option. I recommend putting one on hold, because should you need it, that will mean that other outdoor party-havers will also have the same need. Better safe than sorry.
If extreme heat or extreme cold could be an issue take every precaution to make sure you have a plan B, in case an inconvenience turns into a necessity.
In Florida and the Caribbean relying solely on your plan A just isn’t an option. In these tropical climates, there is a greater chance of having rain than not having rain, and sometimes it’s the wind that can put the kibosh on an outdoor wedding.
At one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever planned, it was crazy-windy. Sure we could have kept the ceremony outdoors, but at what cost? Strong winds could really make guests uncomfortable and furthermore, the sound of wind whipping through a microphone would also affect everyone hearing the important vows. And the lovely decor that the client planned for would have had to be eliminated for safety. The client could not have been any more gracious about the situation despite her desire to be outdoors ocean-side. She immediately changed her thought process and felt good about her choice as a result.
Another of my gracious clients was a beautiful couple that wouldn’t let the rain on their wedding day get them down. The wedding was held at a historical venue in which there was no way to drive up all the way to the wedding structure. We had umbrellas for all of the guests to be able to escort them from their cars to the indoor space and the umbrellas also saved the day for the bridal party portraits. My client, their family and their friends embraced the rain and did not allow the weather to dampen their special day.
